Summer of Hate, narrative
As a British graduate student I took part in the mock election to elect Aaron Henry as governor of Mississippi in November 1963 and again during the Summer Project of 1964 as a volunteer in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
It was an inspiring and radicalising experience.
I have spent the next three decades as a reporter and columnist on the British newspaper, The Guardian, where I am currently the Senior Foreign Correspondent.
