Statement on Presidential Medal of Freedom

Diane Nash 2022

[On July 1st, Freedom Movement veterans Diane Nash and Fred Grey were among 17 Americans awarded Presidential Medals of Freedom —  our nation's highest civilian honor — by President Biden. The medal was awared to Diane Nash for her years of service with SNCC and SCLC, and to Fred Gray for his work as a civil rights lawyer and elected official in Alabama.]

Statement by Diane Nash:

Hundreds of thousands of Descendants of the Emancipation participated, were injured (some permanently), sacrificed, and/or died in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Hundreds of thousands of patriotic Americans supported the movement. This great honor belongs to them as much as it does to me. I am thrilled to receive this Medal on behalf of all of us.
