As remembered by Joyce

I am saddened and shocked to hear this. Colia was parrt of our Tougaloo College contingent in the Jackson, Mississippi movement. She came out of the Jackson NAACP Youth Council. Colie was Medgar Evers' secretary.
She and Bernard Lafayette met and later married, in Jackson after he and other Freedom Riders stayed on after being released from Parchman penitentiary. They later moved to Selma after he joined the SCLC. A celebration of her contributions to the Selma movement were held before her death and a street and building are to be named in her honor.
Colie was a lot of fun, a live wire, gregarious and smart. I was in occasional touch with her on Facebook but not recently. May this giant oak Be remembered for her courage and service in the civil rights army.
