As remembered by Roy
Torkington
I knew Hicks and was in his house many times in the Spring of 1965. I also knew Charles Sims, the leader of the controversial Bogalusa Deacons. The Deacons are mentioned in the obituary, but Sims is not. An article about Sims appeared in the Harvard Crimson in 1965. This paints a thuggish portrait of Sims that is totally at odds with how I remember him. I found both Hicks and Sims to be very friendly and hospitable men. Of course, if I had been a member of the Ku Klux Klan, they might have had a different attitude.
