As remembered by Tanya Guimont
August 6, 2024
As sixteen-year-old high school student, my mother, Dorothy Washington was active in the Civil Rights Movement in Selma.
My mother was a kind-hearted and spirited woman who never boasted about her contributions. Instead, she took quiet pride in the impact her actions had on creating the world we live in today. I want to ensure that her children and grandchildren understand her role in shaping this very different world, thanks to the efforts of the youth.
I grew up in George Washington Carver homes, across the street from Brown Chapel and the freedom movement monument. I recently went home and took a picture of her name on the monument. I hope to ensure that she is remembered for her role as a Foot Soldier, in the Civil Rights Movement.
