This Search Box searches for material posted on this website (as opposed to the Internet in general).

This page uses standard Google (Boolean) search patterns. For example:

Entering freedom ride will find every page that contains either the word freedom or the word ride.
Entering freedom AND ride will find every page that contains both the word freedom and the word ride, but not necessarily together or next to each other.
Entering "freedom ride" (enclosed in quotes) will list only those pages that contain the exact phrase freedom ride.
Partial-word searches are not fully supported. A search for birmin* will return some results, but far fewer results than a search for the full name birminingham.

Search Tips. You can search for:

A keyword or phrase or multiple keywords and phrases separated by commas.
A person's name. (If searching by both first and lastname, enclose both in quotes. For example, "Junebug Jabbo Jones".
An event. For example, "March on Washington" or "sit-in".
An organization. Note that searching for a formal name such as "Congress of Racial Equality" (enclosed in quotes) will return fewer but better targeted results than searching for the acronym "CORE." Note also that any search for any of the major organizations will return a LOT of results — so many as to be overwhelming unless you include additional search parameters. For example, "Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, Lowndes, 1966".
States or dates. Searching for states or dates is possible, but will probably return far too many results to be useful.
Dashes and punctuation count. Searches for "nonviolent" and "non-violent" will return different results so you may need to search for both (this also applies to SNCC's name).
