In Williamston NC as a high school student, I was locked up for demonstrating in front of Griffins Quick Lunch. We could buy cooked food from a window but was not allowed to sit.
My sister Mary Alice Handsome formed a singing group and we did visit Cedar Landing Church in Windsor, NC to sing to raise monies for the movement. My mother Robertha Higgs Bell was fired from her job at the peanut factory because someone said she was demonstrating. We also marched on City Hall were cigarette butts were thrown in the crowd.
