While the media glorifies Martin Luther King, and the other famous leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, sometimes even including the great C.B. King, what being in Albany, Georgia gave to me was an understanding and appreciation for the real heroes of the civil rights movement: the workers, children, mothers and everyday participants who brought their courage, spirit and kindness to the struggle for equality.
The bravery and commitment of these common people have been an inspiration to me for my entire life. Their unending strength in the face of violence, racism and hatred reaches out to us and empowers us during the current difficulties we confront today.
