I went in the second group. I spendt a few days (a week?) in Ruleville, where like everyone I was inspired by Fanny Lou Hamer. I spent the rest of the summer in Cleveland. We sought to set up a freedom school, but found it irrelevant in the face of realities that hit us hard. Stokely Carmichael came and gave us great help. The image of Stokely as a deeply sensitive and caring group leader may surprise some, but that's what he was for us. We shifted into voter registration and no doubt we helped some people register. I think our real effects were indirect.
