In 1966 I worked with a group of twelve American Friends Service Committee summer youth volunteers in Valley View Mississippi (Madison County). Along with some political action and community service activities, I worked to develop voter education materials and teach voter education classes at rural churches. During the summer of 1967 I worked with organizations in Canton Mississippi involved with bringing newly registered African-American voters to the polls.
My summers in Mississippi provided a dramatic contrast to my east coast prep school upbringing. It changed my life and the way that I have raised my five children. I am very proud of their participation in programs and occupations of social conscious and service.
